IDAHO FALLS — State officials are warning Idaho residents to prepare for a potentially severe wildfire season as hot, dry conditions are expected across the state this summer.
Firefighting crews are fully staffed and prepared to respond aggressively to new wildfires. However, officials caution that a heavy winter snowpack has led to significant growth of grass and brush, creating additional fuel for fires.
Idaho is expected to experience a hotter- and drier-than-average summer, conditions that could quickly dry out vegetation and increase wildfire risk.
Idaho Department of Lands has already responded to dozens of fires this year and is encouraging residents to take precautions while enjoying the outdoors.
Officials recommend keeping campfires small, never leaving them unattended, and ensuring they are completely extinguished and cold to the touch before leaving. Drivers are also encouraged to properly secure trailer chains to prevent sparks from igniting roadside vegetation.
State officials say taking simple safety measures can help reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires during the months ahead.
