Rigby event celebrates veterans and families

Heroes and Homefront

REXBURG—Veterans in Jefferson County are holding an event for the community in Rigby this weekend. Heroes and Homefront is a day to celebrate veterans and families, and to bring the community together.

The Heroes and Homefront event will offer resources to veterans in areas like health care, emotional support and more.

Cory Christiaens is a veteran and participant in the Heroes and Homefront event. He said through this event they hope to target a younger demographic of veterans who may not be associated with organizations like The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War and who may not be familiar with the resources they offer.

“The primary goal of the event is to gather veterans together and their families and show them what kind of programs are out there to help them with things like readjusting to civilian life, finding jobs where you can utilize the skills that you learned in the military,” Christiaens said.

There will be booths and stations with resources for veterans and their families at the event, along with a flag retiring ceremony.

This is the first event of its kind put on by Jefferson County Idaho Veterans, which is Post 1004 of the VFW.

“If all goes well, we'd like to see it become kind of an annual event,” Christiaens said.

In addition to supporting veterans, the event emphasizes being family-focused, offering activities for all age groups. The event offers food trucks, live music and various activities for kids and families.

“It's not just for veterans; it's put on by veterans for veterans and for everybody really,” Christiaens said. “We want to provide a welcoming, fun afternoon for anybody who would like to get out of the house, you know walk around the park and maybe meet some people, and do some activities.”

Heroes and Homefronts Veterans and Family Day will be held at Rigby City Park this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
