REXBURG—The Rexburg Cultural Arts Department is hosting a free concert at Porter Park on Monday, as part of its ongoing summer concert series. The show is called “Tribute to American Rock” in honor of the America250 celebration.
Jack Harrell and Friends will perform in the concert. They’ll play a number of America inspired songs from various classic rock artists like Chuck Berry, America and Don McLean.
“The songs will be songs like ‘R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.,’ ‘We're an American Band’ and ‘American Pie,’” Harrell said. “So, it's a tribute to American rock songs, classic rock songs, with the theme of America in the spirit of America's 250th.”
Harrell has taught in the English Department at BYU-Idaho for 31 years and has performed a number of times in Rexburg. He started playing the guitar when he was 15.
Harrell had the idea to hold this American inspired show after watching a Christmas music performance at the Romance Theater in Rexburg.
“As I sat there watching that wonderful show, I thought, ‘Wouldn't it be great to do a similar thing in July as a part of the America's 250th,’” Harrell said. “And so that's what got the idea going then I talked to some musicians, and we put the whole thing together.”
This will be Harrell’s first time performing with this specific group.
“We just got together for this particular show, but we've been practicing for a few months now,” Harrell said.
The Tribute to American Rock performance is Monday at 8 p.m. at Porter Park at the Beehive Pavilion. Those attending are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets to sit on to enjoy the show.
