While making important life decisions, it is important that we strive to receive revelation.
Elder Alvin F. Meredith III, General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, spoke on this topic at the BYU-Idaho devotional this week. His talk was titled “Receiving Revelation for Life Decisions.”
He taught there are five principles that help us receive guidance when making life decisions. The five principles are: pray and fast, study it out in your mind, counsel with trusted people, decide and pray and listen for confirmation.
In his talk, he shared about the time in his life when he was inquiring about marrying his wife. He received his answer during a revelatory process, rather than one singular event.
“The confirmation from the Holy Ghost to sincere inquiries about life decisions is usually a process and rarely an event. Pay attention to those small and simple reassurances that often come over a period of time,” Meredith said.
Being able to recognize “small and simple reassurances” can be challenging. In an interview with BYU-Idaho Radio, Meredith shared how to more easily recognize those confirmations.
“We need to make sure we are constantly putting ourselves in situations where we feel the spirit. And I think the key to that is being diligent about the small and the simple things,” Meredith said. “On a daily basis we carve a little bit of time to get in the scriptures and have meaningful prayer then we will come to learn the language of the spirit, especially when it speaks to us in those small and simple reassurances.”
Meredith encouraged listeners to involve God in their decision making process, along with using their agency and best judgment. He promised that as they do so, they will “walk in the light of the Lord.”
