The magic of Neverland is coming to Blackfoot as the Blackfoot Community Players present “Peter Pan Jr.” Audiences of all ages will delight in seeing Peter, Wendy and the Lost Boys take the stage at the Nuart Theatre in an adventurous and whimsical performance.

The cast features 75 kids who sing, dance, act and even fly across the stage. A third of them are participating in a production for the very first time. Director Adriana Cottam says she has seen the children gain confidence and embrace their roles during rehearsals.

“I think it really builds, you know, a lot of good feelings about themselves to do something that's hard, but also to enjoy doing it,” Adriana Cottam said.

Russ Cottam, Adriana’s husband and the board of directors' vice president, has been involved with the theatre group for 30 years. He hopes audiences walk away with more than just a fun night of entertainment.

“I think Peter Pan is about holding on to your inner child and not becoming stuffy and boring or whatever,” Russ Cottam said. “It's about being a kid in your life, holding onto those childlike features or aspects of you know, fascination with the world.”

Audience interaction will make this production extra special. Glow bracelets will help “bring Tinkerbell back to life,” and crocodiles will weave through the walkways. Concessions are themed too, featuring Pirate’s Booty and Ring Pops to represent Captain Hook’s treasure. Pirate coins will also be available for purchase. Attendees will also have a chance to take photos with the cast.

Organizing the show has been a true community effort. From the child actors to groups working behind the scenes, people of all backgrounds have pitched in their talents to bring the magic of Neverland to life. Blackfoot Community Players is a volunteer-led nonprofit supported by local businesses and individuals.

The Cottams believe theatre can be especially beneficial for childrens’ development.

“The theater involves tactile, kinesthetic, auditory, and visual learning,” Adriana Cottam said. “It's a really good place for a lot of kids to shine who maybe are struggling in some other areas of their life.”

“Peter Pan Jr.” opens Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the Nuart Theatre. Tickets are $12. For more show dates and ticket information or to find a way to get involved, visit the Blackfoot Community Players website.
