REXBURG – The Spori Art Gallery at BYU-Idaho has a new exhibit called “Sacred Marks: Newly Acquired Religious Art.” The free exhibit is available to view through Nov. 9.
The exhibit features art by Rembrandt van Rijn, Albrecht Dürer, Lucas van Leyden and Raimundo de Oliveira.
One of the most notable acquisitions is a rare copy of the “Hundred Guilder Print” by Rambrandt. The print details miracles Jesus Christ performed as told in the book of Matthew in the New Testament.
“There’s so much to look (at) it’s definitely not a few second walk by piece,” said Kyoung DeBell, the curator of the Spori Art Gallery.
As viewers walk into the gallery the art of Leyden, who was a 16th century Dutch artist, will be on the left. These are engravings of the Passion of Christ from the Garden of Gethsemane to the cross.
If viewers go to the right, they’ll see the art of Brazilian artist de Oliveira. His woodblock prints are in vibrant Latin American colors. They depict scenes from the Bible.
“The colors immediately jump out at you screaming Latin colors,” DaBell said. They include a “very unusual combination of bright fuchsia pink with bright green … that you see in Latin American cultures.”
The exhibit is open every day through Thursday, Nov. 9 in the Spori Art Gallery.
