A young mom found a way to create an income with a sourdough side hustle.

After finding out she was pregnant, Libbie Brown wanted a job to help make money while at home with the baby.

“So, I tried to experiment with different ways that I could still bring in an income and I could stay home,” Brown said. “And so, my husband just counseled me to focus on what skills I had.”

Brown enjoyed baking and originally wanted to bake and decorate cakes but found sourdough to be more versatile.

“I mean, you can do a lot with cakes, but it’s cake,” Brown said. “We wanted to be a little more healthy and so I discovered sourdough and it’s super versatile. You can make crackers. You can make bread, muffins, scones, pretty everything under the moon. You can try and add sourdough to it.”

Since starting her business in November 2024, Brown has begun to sell a variety of sourdough items including muffins, scones, breads and cinnamon rolls.

Brown sells her sourdough concoctions through social media platforms like Facebook Marketplace and Instagram.

“Honestly, most of my customers come from Facebook Marketplace as well as my Facebook page,” Brown said. “You’d think Instagram, but ironically that doesn’t do a whole lot. It kind of just depends on the week. You know, it’s always fluctuating, but I usually get like two to five customers a week.”

Brown said the best part of all of this is being able to be at home with her daughter, even when it can be stressful.

“It can be kind of chaotic sometimes, but overall, I love that I can be at home,” Brown said. “And our favorite thing is, I’ll turn on music and she loves music. She’ll like kind of dance and stuff. So, I’ll knead dough and she’s just screaming at the top of her lungs to ‘Hairspray.’ It’s the best.”
