Ucon is celebrating its founders with a day full of activities and fun for the entire family. Founders’ Day is a running tradition in the small community of Ucon. The celebration has grown and changed over the years.
Local, Kriss Pond, is an organizer for the Founders’ Day Parade.
“Several years ago, I got involved with city events,” Pond said. “I recognized that there were members of our community that didn't feel really integrated and welcome in the community because of different religious beliefs and backgrounds. And I went to the city council and I proposed a parade and I just said, we need to do something that brings everybody that everyone is welcome.”
Pond’s idea for a parade was integrated into the Founders’ Day activities. Ucon’s Founders’ Day now has events going on throughout the day.
The day starts off at 7 a.m. with a 5k race. Other events being held throughout the day include a car show, parade, vendor booths, a cook-off, tying up the event with a dinner at 4:30 p.m.
The whole event is based in and around Simmons Park, where those attending can enjoy recent upgrades to the park.
“Simmons Park now has a really great pavilion and covered picnic area and new little tables in the shade,” Pond said. “It's just really a darling little park. It's a great place to come and spend the day.”
Founders’ Day is a way for Ucon to honor and celebrate the first settlers to the area, and to bring the community together. Every year, a local family with a long history in Ucon is chosen to be honored at the event, highlighting their family history.
“We have had some people from a little bit around our area, Rigby and Idaho Falls, but we sure welcome people to come and participate,” Pond said. “It’s kind of a small community, but it’s a great way to bring people out.”
While the Ucon Founders’ Day mostly sees participation and attendance from locals, Pond encourages everyone to come and join in the fun.
Ucon Founders’ Day will be tomorrow at Simmons Park. The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the City of Ucon Building and will end at Simmons Park.
