There are numerous great examples of students who studied entrepreneurship or business at BYU-Idaho who are now doing great things in the ‘real world;’ Ashleigh Andrus is another prime example.

Andrus graduated from BYU-Idaho, and last month, along with her husband, opened her own business called The Ember Cove. It’s a clothing store she describes as an “earth mountain boho, coastal vibe boutique.” They sell a variety of items in addition to women’s clothes, including teeth whitening services, home goods, jewelry and much more.

“Obviously we’re in Idaho, so we don’t have a ton of beachy-themed things,” Andrus said in an interview with BYU-Idaho Radio. “I was born in La Jolla, California, so I’ve always been drawn to that type of style. I feel like I could only get that style when I go to California, so I thought it would be fun to bring that style here.”

Andrus was inspired to create this business through her own experiences.

“I’ve always wanted to have my own boutique,” Andrus said. “I started my photography business, and I liked working for myself. I liked the flexibility of it. Taking that risk and going out on my own was something that I really wanted to do for a while.”

While it is difficult and tiring at times, Andrus says it’s worth it.

“It’s a lot of time and energy, which is awesome because I want it to succeed,” Andrus said. “It’s not a 9-5 anymore. I’m on my own schedule. It’s been great so far. I get to catch up on my sleep now that the grand opening is over.”

According to Andrus, getting experience is among the best advice she has for those wanting to start a business of their own.

“Taking little risks and doing things that you wouldn’t normally do,” Andrus said. “Going out and doing different things helps you build your knowledge base. Having experience is the best thing you can do.”

The Ember Cove is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 4406 E 17th St. in Ammon. For more information, click here.
