The tradition of planting flowers on Main St. in Rexburg began as a different kind of service project.
Mary Flanary, the grant coordinator for the city of Rexburg, explains that Mayor Jerry Merrill came up with the name “Flow-Bor Day,” combining "flowers" and "Arbor Day."
“They started out just doing a community service project around May, sometimes they would clean parks or different things that needed done,” Flanary said. “And then it gradually developed into planting flowers on Main Street.”
The family-friendly event aims to bring the community together to create something beautiful. Flanary says one of her favorite parts is seeing the result of everyone’s hard work.
"The best thing is driving by later in the summer and seeing all the beautiful blossoms up and down main street. I think everybody loves that especially when they can point at one flower bed and say, ‘I planted those flowers.’"
