REXBURG— Independence Day is one of the biggest celebrations of the year in Rexburg and one BYU-Idaho student has a big role in planning the events.

Casey Cruz, a BYU-Idaho student, and director of Spirit Events activities on campus, is also working as an intern with the Rexburg Area Chamber of Congress. One of her duties as the intern is to help market and advertise the 4th of July festivities, but she is also working on the 4th of July Parade.

“This year our parade theme is America, the Beautiful, like the song,” Cruz said. “It's going to be a celebration of diversity and vibrancy within our community, and we're really excited to see how everyone interprets the theme within their decorations for their entry.”

The parade is set to start at 10 a.m. Directly following the parade is the Party at the Park event, which Cruz says will be filled with food, music and vendors. Cruz says that community involvement is an essential focus of the celebration.

“We're encouraging more vendors to participate. We love helping to support local businesses here,” Cruz said. “And that's a good way to do so, as our Independence Day Parade is one of the biggest events of the year.”

The 4th of July wouldn’t be complete without a fireworks show. In the past, it was held in three separate locations due to COVID-19.

“We're in talks with the city to finalize details for the fireworks show. In the past, it was held in three separate locations due to COVID-19, so that might be something that's continuing on,” Cruz said. “Our goal is to light up the sky in the evening with our fireworks. And we encourage everyone to come to this event. It's an amazing close to the 4th of July.”

The Grand Marshall will also be recognized at this event. For more information on how to nominate someone for the award and for updates on the Independence Day activities, visit the Rexburg Idaho Chamber of Commerce website at www.rexburgchamber.org.
