If you miss the glory days of being a cub scout, Pack 3012 in Rexburg has just the activity for you.
The pack is hosting a Pinewood Derby on Thursday, Oct. 30 at the VFW Veteran’s Hall in Rexburg. It’s the first time a Pinewood Derby has been open to the public in the area.
“It’s open to all age groups, including adults,” said pack committee chair Rusty Jenkins in an interview with BYU-Idaho Radio. “We encourage families to come and have a good time and help us raise a little bit of money. If adults have been in scouting before and want to relive it with their kids, they can come and join us.”
The derby is a fan-favorite among both children and their parents.
“Our families love the Pinewood Derby,” Jenkins said. “It’s a fun time to make something. The kids really enjoy it. All the years I’ve been involved in scouts, it’s one of the main events every year. Pinewood Derbies are just fun.”
Registration for the race closes Thursday, Oct. 23, and car kits can be purchased for $15 and picked up at the VFW in Rexburg from 4:30-6:00 p.m.
For anyone wanting to participate that misses the deadline, they can still enter the race at the time of the event with … a potato.
“We will do spud racing too,” Jenkins said. “We have the base wheels and then people can come and decorate their potato the night of the event. That registration fee is only $5 to help cover the cost of the potatoes.”
While Pack 3012 is doing the derby to help raise much-needed funds for the pack, Jenkins reminds people of the ultimate goal of scouting.
“It’s such an amazing program,” Jenkins said. “It helps the kids to develop life skills and meet new friends that they may never be able to meet elsewhere. Our pack just keeps growing every year.”
Doors open for the derby on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 5:00 p.m. with races starting at 5:30 p.m. For more information, click here.
