BYU Athletics has just named a new director of athletics.
Brian Santiago was named director of Athletics, according to a statement released by the school.
Santiago has worked in BYU’s Athletic Department since 1977, first as a member of the men’s basketball coaching staff before transitioning to administration in 2001. He became a senior associate athletic director in 2008 and was appointed as deputy athletic director in 2017.
In his role as deputy athletic director, Santiago oversaw 10 different sports at BYU as well as sports marketing and communications operations.
Santiago was officially introduced by BYU in a news conference today. He gave an opening message at this conference.
“I’m excited, these are exciting times,” Santiago said. “It’s been overwhelming the past 24 hours to see how much people around this world care about BYU Athletics.”
In his opening statement, he shared a message to all BYU Athletics fans.
“Cougar nation, lets go,” Santiago exclaimed. “There’s never been a better time to be a part of BYU Athletics and to be part of this university than right now.”
While excited for what the future holds, Santiago reflected on his journey with BYU Athletics and attributes his success not only to his family, but also to God.
“The last few days I have had time to reflect on my journey at BYU, and I would be remiss not to acknowledge my Father in Heaven and Savior Jesus Christ in bringing me to this exceptional university and guiding me through the last 27 years,” Santiago said. “It’s been an amazing experience and I am excited about what the future holds.”
