BYU Idaho Theatre and Dance Department brings to life the classic Cinderella tale

The Theatre and Dance Department at BYU–Idaho is enchanting audiences with its latest production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Cinderella.” With elaborate sets, vibrant costumes, a heartfelt cast and unforgettable songs like "Stepsister's Lament" and "Ten Minutes Ago," the show promises an unforgettable experience for the whole family.

Costume designers were instructed to draw inspiration from old fairy tale book illustrations, giving the wardrobe a whimsical, storybook feel. One of the most striking set pieces is a giant tree puppet operated by four puppeteers, bringing a magical realism to the stage.

Jennie Pardoe, the director of the production and a faculty member at BYU–Idaho, is proud of the dedication and enthusiasm the students have shown.

“Anytime problems have come up, people have addressed them with grace and excitement,” she said. “I’m so excited to show off some of the incredible work our students have done.”

Pardoe also says the classic story has deeper messages. She loves the morals at the heart of Cinderella, handling conflict with kindness, looking to a higher power for help and believing in oneself.

“She learns that nothing is truly impossible,” Pardoe said.

The musical features music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein. The original televised production aired on March 31, 1957, and has remained a beloved classic ever since.

For Pardoe, the show is more than just a production; it’s nostalgic.

“Musicals were a big part of my childhood. My sister Emma and I especially loved watching Rodgers & Hammerstein’s ‘Cinderella.’ Remembering how magical that felt made me want to bring this show to life for others,” Pardoe said.

This family-friendly performance is sure to inspire, with BYU–Idaho students bringing magic to the stage through vivid costumes, captivating sets and passionate performances.

The shows message aligns with BYU–Idaho’s values.

“It’s a story about love, overcoming obstacles and kindness. It’s about a girl who looks to higher powers for inspiration and help when she’s done all she can,” Pardoe said.

The student cast and crew have worked throughout the semester to prepare for their performances, which run throughout June.

Pardoe hopes that beyond the glitter and magic, audiences leave with something more.

“I hope people reflect on their divine nature and their potential to be something wonderful,” she said.

Don’t miss the chance to experience the timeless magic of Cinderella, filled with romance, whimsy, and the beauty of happily ever after.
