BYU-Idaho students organize a music festival in effort to build connection and community.
Students Seth Chamberlain and Blake Johnson assembled Rexburg Meltdown which will feature 16 bands and two acoustic singers spanning multiple genres.
“Meltdown is a celebration of all the music in Southeast Idaho, or at least all the bands that we could find,” Johnson said. “We’ve got country artists, we’ve got alternative rock, we've got indie, we've got hard core and screamo. All of those guys will be kind of far away from the vendors, but we wanted to shine a light on the alternative culture that is here in Rexburg.”
Johnson said that while he and Chamberlain are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, they don’t feel they fit in a stereotypical mold.
“We’re into different stuff,” said Johnson. “We look different, have long hair and facial hair, and we’re a bit rowdy. But just because we don’t have fun at church activities doesn’t mean that we’re out of luck. We can build a community outside of BYU-Idaho while still being part of that community as well.”
Chamberlain said he thinks it’s important to have events where people can come together and feel like they belong, not just at school, but within The Church as well.
“I don’t think I’d be an active member if I wasn’t able to find people in my life that liked the same things as I did, where I didn’t feel like I was so alone,” Chamberlain said. “As a kid I felt like I was totally different than everyone else. I didn’t belong. And I’m so grateful that I found people like Blake where I feel like I have a community of people who understand what I go through.”
They said they hope meltdown can be a way for people of different backgrounds and similar beliefs to come together.
The meltdown will begin in Porter Park on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Johnson said each band would play for 30-minute sets. The only bands that will be playing longer, is their own. Together Johnson and Chamberlain are in the band, The Stone Popes. Chamberlain will also be performing with the band, Anyone Awake, who will be openers for The Plain White T’s in August.
