REXBURG— A BYU-Idaho student is planning to attend Boise Entrepreneur Week in a couple weeks to learn alongside thousands of business owners and to pitch his own business.
Nick Hepworth co-founded Subitt, a subscription-managing business, at BYU-Idaho with his roommate, Aoi Kuriki, and third co-founder Jae Hyun Kim a couple years ago.
Subitt is a company that manages subscription services for local businesses.
“We decided customers probably want the ability to subscribe to different things from local businesses as well, that they can’t really subscribe to right now. We’re like, okay, let’s get all these subscriptions that these different small business owners can sell. Let’s list them on a marketplace for people to browse and buy from,” Hepworth said in an interview.
The student and co-founder said the service creates more secure revenue for small businesses and allows customers of these businesses to save money over time on products they were not able to subscribe to before.
Hepworth said he initially recruited people to work on his team from BYU-Idaho’s own Science and Technology Center.
“I literally would walk around when we were building our first team around the STC building. And I’d go and talk to people who I thought were really, really talented and I’d say, ‘Hey, you look like you could code pretty well,’ and come to find out, there’s a lot of talent here,” Hepworth said.
Subitt has enjoyed success since it was founded, winning first place in a competition at Boise State University. The business won at the university’s Idaho Entrepreneur Challenge in April.
Hepworth said the challenge propelled the business to advance to Boise Entrepreneur Week, which will be from Sept. 30 to Oct. 4 in Boise.
Trailhead hosts the week, which is Idaho’s largest community, entrepreneur-centered event and includes speakers and panelists who will share methods for succeeding in Idaho’s entrepreneurial environment.
There will also be a pitch competition, where the winners will receive $50,000.
Hepworth said he and his team are practicing pitching their business to prepare for the event, where judges will analyze their idea and platform.
