BYU-Idaho’s senior physician will speak at the Rexburg Area Chamber of Commerce Business Skills and Networking forum on June 18 at the Atrium at Hemming Village.

Doctor Andy Bradbury has been working steadily at BYU-Idaho since the early 2000s but has been involved in many different work environments. He grew up on a poultry farm, attended college, worked as a beekeeper, attended medical school, did his residency in family medicine, worked in emergency rooms and received his boards in emergency medicine. He said the United States Air Force put him through medical school, so he worked with the Air Force, the Army and the Idaho Army National Guard.

Bradbury’s forum speech will discuss mental health and different kinds of work environments and how they can be correlated. He said his experiences in different environments will aid him in his forum address.

“It matches quite a bit with things I’ve been concerned about over the years in mental health in general,” Bradbury said. “I’ve worked in a lot of different settings. I’ve worked in places that were really a joy to work in and you looked forward to going to work and I’ve worked at other places that were really very difficult.”

Bradbury said workers become happier when they know and feel that their work is important.

“What people want in the workplace is to have their work be meaningful,” Bradbury said. “They want to know that what they are doing is important and it doesn’t matter how mundane the job seems to be, if you have a sense that you’re part of something bigger and something important, then you can be very happy to work.”

Bradbury said positive work environments with happier workers can be cultivated by good leaders who have a clear vision of their business’s potential.

“The best leaders are the ones that create the vision for the group and let people know that they’re part of that vision,” Bradbury said. “Open up conversation with the people that work there too, there needs to be an opportunity to have your opinions and ideas heard.”
