Elizabeth Lowham is one of the many BYU-Idaho alumni making an impact in the world as a disciple leader of Jesus Christ.
She graduated from BYU-Idaho in 2018 and is a published author who specializes in fantasy books and has written several books such as “Sonnets & Serpents” and “Beauty Reborn.”
Lowham recently published “Casters and Crowns,” and did a book-signing at Deseret Book. In an interview with BYU-Idaho Radio, she talked about what goes into her writing process.
“I start out building a skeleton, and I’m just trying to figure out the right bones,” Lowham said. “Then we start to get to a place where I’m like, ‘OK, I think I have a functioning skeleton. This is starting to look like the creature that I want it to be.’”
Lowham started writing when she was around 15 years old. After attending her first writing conference in Ogden, Utah, she realized writing was something she could pursue as a career.
“It was amazing to talk to these authors and see that they’re people, and I could be like them,” Lowham said. “It was very inspiring for me, and that was kind of the moment in my life where I thought this is what I want to do and I also felt like I could do it. It was an achievable goal.”
The most rewarding part isn’t the money or awards Lowham receives for her books, but something more personal to her.
“When I personally work through obstacles and I come out on the other side and I see what I’ve become, that’s rewarding,” Lowham said. “When I have somebody who comes up and tells me that one of my books hit them really personally and that it helped them heal, in the end that means more than an award.”
Lowham says her time at BYU-Idaho was one of the biggest influences in her writing career.
“My time on campus was crucial for where I am now,” Lowham said. “I wouldn’t be where I am now without my time here. A big part of that is the professors that I learned from. I had so many good professors.”
