People are more likely to visit libraries when they live close to one, according to Florida State University’s College of Communication & Information. The Bonneville County Library District is opening a new branch in Ucon to bring the library closer to residents.
The grand opening of the Ucon branch will be on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the new library located along N. Yellowstone Highway and there will be many activities.
“We're going to have a big party, lots of giveaways and starting at 10 o'clock, the mayor's going to come and do a ribbon cutting,” said Michelle Tolman the director of the Bonneville County Library District. “And we've got snow cones and cotton candy and books and T-shirts and things for people that come, and it's going to be a lot of fun.”
The library begins functioning as a regular library immediately after the grand opening. The library's hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to noon and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Library cards are free to those living in the library district and people can get one by showing their ID and proof of address.
Besides books, the library will have exploration kits, games and audiobooks available to check out and will be the closest library for those in Ucon.
“The Ucon/Coltman area really was far from a library service and so when that opportunity came it just really fit within our goals and priorities to make that happen,” Tolman said. “And we'd rather have a small library close to people and then share resources than have them have to travel far for a bigger library because it just has shown that it's worked better for our patrons.”
