September 11 is a day we commemorate each year and learn about the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, but it is also the nation’s day of service where volunteers around the country strive to perform acts of service to honor the victims and first responders from that day.
Many individuals are using the website and app Just Serve to find service projects for today. The site features many different service opportunities that can be done locally or projects that help people internationally. The site is easy to use and has opportunities that everyone can participate in.
“We'd encourage everybody to get on and find something, stretch out a little bit from what you've done before and find something rewarding to bless your life and the life of somebody else,” said Eric Andreasen, Just Serve’s Rexburg area coordinator. “It's such an important thing to remember on this day, but something that we should carry over into every day of our life is just finding little ways that we can serve each day each week.”
National Day of Service reminds everyone that the nation can unite again in service like it did on Sept. 11, 2001. Paying tribute to all involved on that day through service can take the sorrow felt by the country and turn it into something that brings communities together through serving their fellow neighbor.
“I think that's the reason why that date was designated as a National Day of Service,” Andreasen said. “When people can remember the sacrifices that have been made, we can kind of just put aside our differences and come together in serving one another, serving in our communities and just helping make this world a better place.”
