Idaho Falls Dist. 91 Superintendent Reflects on Career

BYU-Idaho Radio · District 91 Superintendent George Boland Retiring

Idaho Falls School District 91 has had the same superintendent for the last 15 years. Recently, Superintendent George Boland announced he will retire at the end of the school year.

Boland graduated from Montana State University and was?pursuing?a career in athletic training. After graduation, he received a teaching certificate?and worked as an athletic trainer at a high school in Billings for five years.?He received his master’s degree in sports medicine from the University of Oregon.?

“At the same time that I was doing that, they had passed a bond and were building a new high school in Billings. I was recruited to come back there and got to participate in that. So, I taught for another six years in Billings. I ended up coming back to Idaho Falls, which is where I grew up,"?Boland said.

From there, Boland’s experience in education only grew. He worked in the public school system in Idaho Falls. When the?superintendent position opened, he applied and got the job in 2005. Now, 15 years later, Boland announced he will retire at the end of the school year.??

During his time as superintendent of Idaho Falls District 91, he has been a part of many influential projects, including securing a bond to help rebuild old schools.?

“There hadn’t been a bond even attempted in District 91 since the early 90’s. Passing a bond that helped us rebuild four of our oldest elementary schools and upgrade some other facilities, I think is a definite highlight,”?Boland said.

Boland was also instrumental in shifting 9th?graders to high schools, he helped create District 91’s Compass Academy and encouraged investments in technology in schools.?

“Probably the biggest change I have seen in my tenure as the superintendent is the increasing role technology plays in just about everything that we do anymore,”?Boland said.

Boland expressed his gratitude for?the people he was able to work with. He said?he loved helping make an impact in helping students graduate high school.

“You know, a lot of small things over time, students, staff, being able to help some kids be successful and graduate high school and also working with some really outstanding staff over the years,”?he said.

The district has now started the search for its next superintendent.
