Idaho Fall Zoo Reopening

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, another option is available this coming Saturday, May 16.

The Idaho Falls Zoo at Tautphaus Park opens this Saturday after COVID-19 delayed it. The zoo’s season typically starts in April.

But because of COVID-19, the zoo has prepared some detailed plans on how to keep people safe in a crowded environment.

Sunny Katseanes, the education curator for the zoo, mentioned some of the guidelines in an interview with BYU-Idaho Radio.

These are some of the things the zoo will implement to adhere to guidelines from public health officials:

  • The zoo will only allow a certain number of people in the zoo at a time. They will count how many people are in the zoo at a given time as people come into and exit the zoo.
  • The line at the front entrance will be formed in a way that allows people to practice social distancing.
  • The gift shop will be closed.
  • Playgrounds will be off-limits.
  • Petting zoos will be closed.
  • People will not be able to purchase zoo passes at the zoo itself (they can be purchased on the zoo’s website).
  • Education programs will not be held until further notice from the zoo.
  • All zoo workers will wear facemasks (visitors are not required to wear masks).

Despite the restrictions, Katseanes said the zoo provides a great opportunity to get outside and clear your head of all the COVID-19 hysteria.

“The zoo is a great way to your mind off all of this excitement going on in our world,” Kateanes said. “We just hope everybody will come to the zoo and have a great time.”

Katseanes asks everyone to please respect the health and safety of everyone there.

The zoo will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, visit the zoo’s website.
