REXBURG-- From roaring engines to the sweeping dust clouds formed by avid dune buggy riders the Sand Showdown hosted by Idaho Dunes RV is bringing fierce competition to the St. Anthony Sand Dunes Saturday.
Idaho Dunes RV General Manager Garrett McGroarty says “duners” from all over the country are racing in a charity event to support the Fremont County Fraternal Order of Police. This is the ninth annual event.
“It's a great time to bring family out and you know, have a night out that doesn't cost you much,” said McGroarty.
The showdown event is a sand car race between old and new school-style vehicles where drivers from all over the country come to compete for a trophy and the title “King of the Sand Dunes.”
The race starts Saturday at 9 a.m. at Devil’s Dune at the St. Anthony Sand Dunes. For those who don’t want to get into the sand, there are many other activities as well starting at 6:30 p.m. at Idaho Dunes RV. The activities include a free concert from Levi Bloom, a country rock music artist and a live and silent auction. Donated items from local businesses will be auctioned with proceeds going to the Fremont County Fraternal Order of Police.
“Our local sheriffs have had to spend a lot of time and they keep us all safe and keep us duning out here and so we thought no better way to pay them for all their hard work and you know as to throw an event for them and raise money that helps them,” said McGroarty.
For those who do not want to bid at the auction, donations are also accepted.
“If you can't come and you want to participate in the way of donating, reach out to us there’s always ways to donate if you'd like to support the cause without being here. Tell other people about it. We just really want to get the community involved because again, this all goes back to the community with the local FOP, so that's what really matters,” said McGroarty.
There is also free food provided at the event from World’s Best Corndogs.
