REXBURG — BYU-Idaho is home to so many different students from so many different places. Each student has their own unique story. Primrose Kambamura, a BYU-Idaho student from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, is one of those students with just such a story.
Kambamura is a second-year communications student and a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One day, while she was walking with her mom, Kambamura met missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Kambamura stopped them and began talking with them. They set up an appointment to come and visit Kambamura at her home. Kambamura says the purpose for their visit wasn’t clear to her at first. She thought it was a date.
“They came to my house on Sunday, and I just prepared everything,” Kambamura said. “I cleaned the house. I just made everything look good. They came and they started pulling out scriptures. I was like, ‘What is going on?’”
That confusion did not last long, however. According to Kambamura, as she learned about the Plan of Salvation, her interest was piqued.
“It was so interesting because I didn't know that there's a spirit world that we go to after we die,” Kambamura said. “That was so interesting.”
However, after that first lesson, her journey to the gospel of Jesus Christ hit a bit of a speed bump.
“We waited for them and they didn't come,” Kambamura said. “I think it was that time during COVID, so they were sent back to their country, to the United States, and we didn't know that they were gone.”
Kambamura and her sister, who had also joined in on the lesson, lost contact with the Church for about six months. Until a message appeared on her mom’s phone.
“They were like, ‘We're the missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ,’” Kambamura said. “I was like, ‘Yes!’ I screamed so loud. I was so happy to hear from them, they came and they started teaching us.”
Kambamura said it was shortly after that she was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After that, things began to fall into place. The day after her baptism, Kambamura came across a channel that was talking about Joseph Smith — byuTV. After that, she says she started joking with the missionaries that she was going to apply to Brigham Young University. It was then that a missionary suggested that she apply to BYU-Idaho.
Now, two years into her time at BYU-Idaho, Kambamura looks back with gratitude at how the university has helped her to come unto Christ.
“I love how people here, everyone is just trying so hard to be nice to each other,” Kambamura said. “Even if someone is having a bad day, they'll try to make sure that someone is feeling better. The people here, they're all just so Christlike. And that's also made me want to be there for someone and try my best to also be like Christ.”
