Free law academy teaches the judicial system to local people

Have you ever felt scared, confused or perhaps misinformed about the rules of the court of law when you stepped into a courtroom or lawyer’s office? If so the Seventh District Bar Association of Idaho will host a Citizens Law Academy.

“The Seventh District, as well as other judicial districts within the state of Idaho, has historically hosted a Citizen Law Academy each year for people to get more familiar with the laws that are affecting their day to day lives, the structure of the court and understand how the judicial system works,” said Alayne Bean, the deputy trial court administrator for the Seventh Judicial District.

Bean said people can receive the benefit of knowing what reality is and what is not when it comes to certain court situations.

“I think there are so many media portrayals of life in the court,” she said, “and you know movies, or TV shows, or documentaries about things that is probably good to just ferret out what is real and what is Hollywood in a scenario.”

Bean said there will be notable district judges, court administrators, even a member from the Idaho House of Representatives as guest speakers for the event.

“Our first speaker is Representative Wendy Horman from the (Idaho) House of Representatives, and she is going to talk about how laws are made. And then we’re having Administrative District Judge Dane Watkins as well as Trial Court Administrative Tammy White, they’ll be talking about basically the structure of the court, how things are organized, the different divisions of the court, jurisdictions things like that.”

Bean will also be a guest presenter talking about the important details of criminal court. The Citizens Law Academy will be held at the Bonneville County Courthouse from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on September 6. To register for the Citizens Law Academy, send an email to 7thdba.Idaho@gmail.com.
