The BYU–Idaho Music Department is doing more than teaching technique—it is preparing students for lives of musical and personal fulfillment. With more than 300 students pursuing different paths, the department offers four degrees: Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Musical Arts, Bachelor of Music Education and a Minor or Concentration in Music.

In this episode of Fulfilling the Mission, we sit down with Department Chair Daniel Kerr and David Djambov, a senior studying Organ Performance, to discuss the roles they play in the Music Department at BYU–Idaho.

Kerr began piano lessons at age six and added the organ at nine, eventually studying organ performance at the University of Southern California. Djambov was drawn to BYU–Idaho after seeing photos and videos of the campus’ renowned “Great Pipe Organ,” and knew this was where he wanted to study.

Both emphasize that music at BYU–Idaho is more than performance, it is inspired creation.

“That’s the beauty of studying here,” Djambov said. “We have that focus on the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Savior that can fill you as a person and augment your leadership in other ways, in this case music.”

This enthusiasm is fueled by a higher purpose. As Kerr encourages his students: “Let’s keep writing it. Let’s create new things that enrich faith, build faith and spread the gospel.”

Through rigorous study, spiritual inspiration and a focus on gospel-centered creation, the BYU–Idaho Music Department fulfills the mission of BYU-Idaho to uplift lives and prepare disciples of Jesus Christ.
