With summer just around the corner, Idaho Falls is offering free swim lessons to help children stay safe in the water.

This Saturday, children ages 3 to 13 will have the opportunity to participate in the 8th Annual Free Swim Lessons event. Each child will receive a free 25-minute swim lesson at the Wes Deist Aquatic Center.

The aquatic center is an authorized American Red Cross provider, meaning lessons are taught by instructors certified through the American Red Cross. During the lesson, children will also be evaluated on their skill level so parents can better understand which swim class may be the best fit moving forward.

Ashli Johnson, supervisor of the aquatic center, says the free lessons help introduce new swimmers to the water in a comfortable environment.

“I think it just brings awareness and gives people a place to come and do it,” Johnson said.

Registration is already nearly 80 percent full, so families are encouraged to sign up soon. Parents can register their children through the City of Idaho Falls website.
