Small and simple things: How to become a disciple of Jesus Christ

REXBURG— Dwight Wray is a faculty member at BYU-Idaho in the Biology Department, and his passion for small things such as viruses and diseases was the inspiration for his devotional address he gave today.

“I just felt like that would be a really good lead in that we have these little, teeny tiny organisms, bacteria, viruses that can cause major disruptions in our lives,” Wray said. “And we can make little, teeny tiny decisions that either cause disruptions in our spiritual lives or can lead to spiritual strength.”

He linked this principle to a scripture found in 1 Nephi chapter 37 verse six, which says, “By small and simple things are great things brought to pass.”

Wray then produced a list of five small things students can do every day that will ultimately help them strengthen their personal relationship with the Savior and how to become better disciples of Jesus Christ.

They include daily prayer, daily scripture study, keeping the Sabbath Day holy, paying an honest tight and worshiping in the temple.

“As we discuss each of these small things in more detail, I invite you to open your minds and hearts so you can receive inspiration about the small things you can do to become a better disciple of Jesus Christ,” Wray said.

In his talk, he highlighted the importance of these five small and simple things and promised an abundance of blessings for those who faithfully put them into practice. He promised joy, peace and knowledge that ultimately leads to eternal life.

“As I have consistently incorporated the small things of the gospel into my life, I have been happier and have had more peace and joy … I pray that each of us will make the effort to become better disciples of Jesus Christ by doing the small and simple things that will bring great spiritual power into our lives,” Wray said.
