In this week’s BYU-Idaho devotional address, BYU-Idaho President Henry J. Eyring and his wife, Sister Kelly Eyring, taught lessons from the life of President Spencer W. Kimball, who served as the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1973 – 1985. They shared how advantageous choosing to be kind can be, the value in remaining cheerful through trials and why consistent hard work can help us to be better people and saints.
Sister Eyring talked about the lessons in paradoxes, pointing out Matthew 16:25, which says, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.”
“I have had many opportunities to test this paradox out and it always brings the greatest friendships, the most growth, and the best experiences,” she said.
President Eyring quoted current Church President Russell M. Nelson when he talked about growth as well.
“Push through the tough times and realize that even small victories mean you are having success,” he said.
He also quoted Camilla Kimball that “We need to be always learning. A person keeps from getting stale by having some objective, by reading, writing and talking in pursuit of a plan.”
In an interview with BYU-Idaho Radio, President Eyring said, “Fortunately, I like to write, but have enough things that I want to keep track of that I’ve got to write it down. I want to be sure that if heaven has got a message for me, I’ve got space for it.”
