REXBURG— The devotional speaker for the third week of the spring 2026 semester at BYU-Idaho taught students the importance of the voice of God in their lives.
Elder Robert C. Gay, an Emeritus General Authority Seventy, told BYU-Idaho Radio he hopes the students understand they are children of God. God will never forsake his children.
In the BYU-Idaho devotional he said, “The Savior is close by. He is able to rescue and redeem you from any danger, mistake, uncertainty, or betrayal you may be feeling or facing, whether that be physical or spiritual.”
Elder Gay’s message focused on a few real-life stories of God responding to the voice of his children.
He said that during a stake conference assignment he was prompted to get his haircut at Walmart. There he met a woman who was seeking direction in her life. Through his inspired words from God, she was able to find an answer to her prayer.
“I suggest one of the most important things you will need to do, is His work given you by the promptings of the Holy Ghost. This will take courage, as these promptings may not be convenient or clearly understood in the moment and will ultimately lead you to His ministry to the lost, the least, and the last,” Elder Gay said.
Elder Gay said many times allowing prayer to be a constant dialogue with God has helped him know what to do. By letting the Lord guide his life he has been able to receive help in his personal and professional life.
In a BYU-Idaho Radio interview, he encouraged those students who are waiting for an answer from God to never give up. All of God’s children will experience times when they wonder where God is in their lives.
“But part of the test is to trust that it will come, and you keep at it. And it may not come in the ways that you think it will come,” Elder Gay said.
In his BYU-Idaho devotional talk he shared how even the prophet Lehi, from the Book of Mormon, faced many obstacles when following the promptings of the Lord.
He said the idea is to keep “your mind and your heart in sync with God.”
