REXBURG— Today’s BYU-Idaho devotional speaker invited students to become legendary at BYU-Idaho.

Trent Shippen said students and faculty are blessed because of their time at BYU-Idaho. Students can increase their legendary qualities as they look to bless others. He quoted Elder Henry B. Eyring from his talk in 2001 titled “A Steady Upward Course.”

“The students at BYU-Idaho will become legendary for their capacity to build those around them and add value wherever they serve.”

In a BYU-Idaho Radio interview, Shippen said he first encountered the legendary atmosphere as a boy. He visited Ricks College as a Boy Scout where students helped him with merit badges. He remembers being impressed by the students’ kindness.

The atmosphere of the campus led him to play basketball at Ricks College, coach basketball at Ricks and Brigham Young University and later work as part of the Student Activities program at BYU-Idaho.

Shippen said students can become legendary today by helping others, being intentional, having readiness, being teachable, building others, etc.

Shippen taught that when students remember God, He inspires them in how to bless the lives of others.

“The best teams—and the strongest communities—are those where everyone understands their role and helps others succeed in their own lives,” Shippen said.

Shippen has learned many principles on the court and through competition. He taught that the Latin word for compete is con petire. It translates to “seek together” or “strive together.”

“This phrase suggests it's a collaborative effort where competitors can help each other and help others to reach their highest potential,” Shippen said.

Shippen invited students to write down the blessings they’ve received by being a part of BYU-Idaho. He said he hopes when students leave this campus, they serve with their talents and add value to their communities.
