Good things can distract us from the most important things and good priorities may overshadow the most important priorities. These were just a couple messages from this week’s BYU-Idaho devotional.

Elder Hans T. Boom, a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Sister Marjan Boom spoke in the devotional about how they both prioritize growing their relationships with Jesus Christ.

Elder Boom reminded listeners to consider how they arrange their priorities.

“It is not about how much money you can make. It is more about … spending time and money on things that are of eternal worth,” he said in his devotional talk.

Elder Boom talked about an example from The Book of Mormon, when Nephi said he went to the mountains to pray often. Elder Boom encouraged listeners to also prioritize seeking God’s counsel and to enter the temple often.

Sister Boom also encouraged listeners to seek God’s counsel. She warned listeners of distractions that can get in the way of connecting with God.

“Satan knows that we connect better to heaven during the quiet times of our lives, so he will do everything to disturb those times of peace– and he is very good at it,” Sister Boom said in her talk.

In an interview with BYU-Idaho Radio, Elder Boom shared how his relationship with Christ has evolved.

“I think as a teenager, you look at Christ and Heavenly Father as the ones that can give you everything you need. That relationship changes when you start to understand what you can give back to them, and I think that is when they start giving even more,” he said.

In the same interview, Sister Boom reminded listeners that even though some distractions are good, wholesome things, such as learning a new language, they can get in the way of what is more important. She shared how she has prioritized scripture study over language study in the morning.

“You get distracted by good things, because learning a new language is a good thing, but sometimes it prevents you from doing the essential things in your life,” she said.
