BYU-Idaho devotional speaker teaches how to find joy in life

REXBURG— In her devotional address given on Tuesday, Mindy Harris shared her thoughts on joy and happiness and how to find it.

Harris began her address with a scripture found in 2 Nephi 2:25, “Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.” Harris says people are meant to have joy in this life. She says joy can be found in many ways.

“The lack of joy in our life often comes with a lack of perspective,” Harris said. “If we have set expectations in life that are unmet, we will start to focus on our circumstances, influences and forces outside of ourselves.”

In an interview with BYU-Idaho Radio, Harris said joy is all around and the attitude people have starts inwardly by asking how to find joy in the moment.

“And sometimes when we're in trials, it is really difficult to maybe find that joy,” Harris said. “So, as we are just looking at the little things, and looking for the joy in the things that are happening. I like to say too, like looking at the tender mercies. So sometimes there's just like those little tender mercies that we can look for that can let us know Heavenly Father's still helping us amidst a trial.”

Harris attributes her success in finding joy to the trials she and her family have had to face.

“Trials are meant to help us learn, grow, and develop so that we can become more like our Heavenly Father. When we are on this path and can see from an eternal perspective, we can also experience the joy that the gospel brings. Often, when we're in the midst of the storm, it can be hard to see the hand of the Lord in our lives. As we come through the storm and look back, we understand the miracles that happened,” Harris said.
