In his BYU-Idaho devotional, “Revelation: Opening the Heavens,” Brother Chris Allison reminded students that Heavenly Father wants to communicate with them, even when His answers come differently or later than they expect.

In an interview with BYU-Idaho Radio, Allison said conversations with students helped inspire his message. Students sometimes tell him they have never received revelation, but as they discuss their experiences, many recognize moments when they have felt the Spirit. His service as a patriarch has also deepened his desire to understand revelation.

Allison explained that revelation does not always arrive as a dramatic experience. Feelings of peace during church, scripture study or temple attendance can be forms of communication from Heavenly Father.

“Have you ever felt peace from the Holy Ghost? If you have, you have received revelation!” Allison said in his devotional.

He also encouraged students to consider how they approach Heavenly Father with questions. Rather than asking broadly which major to choose, Allison suggested studying the options and praying about a specific course of action. This preparation can help people understand the feelings or impressions that follow.

“I’ve learned to get very specific with my questions, so that if peace comes or an uncomfortable feeling comes, I know what it means,” Allison said in the interview.

His message also addressed the challenge of following guidance that differs from personal plans. As a high school senior, Allison felt prompted to join the military, despite having other career goals. He initially resisted but eventually entered Army basic training three days after graduation.

There, conversations about his faith created opportunities to take fellow soldiers to church, teach one how to pray and discuss God during everyday activities.

“Basic training was not easy or fun, but God worked through me to bless others, just as He will work through you when you follow His revealed will,” Allison said in his devotional.

For those who feel their prayers remain unanswered, Allison encouraged continued action. Scripture study, temple worship and faithful preparation can help people seek guidance while patiently waiting on the Lord’s timing.

He emphasized that uncertainty does not have to prevent someone from moving forward. Looking back on his experiences, Allison said he has seen blessings from following promptings, including those he initially did not want to follow.

“And if they’re struggling to receive revelation, just keep asking, seeking and knocking, and God will answer,” Allison said in the interview.
