REXBURG—Today's BYU-Idaho devotional speaker taught students the need to have “great checks” on their path of discipleship.

General Authority Seventy for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Elder B. Corey Cuvelier explained at the BYU-Idaho Devotional today, “a great check causes us to pause and honestly evaluate where we stand before God.”

Each child of God will have many opportunities and challenges throughout life. Elder Cuvelier called these decisions opportunity costs. He said each person will have to evaluate what they receive and give up by their choices.

Elder Cuvelier shared his experience taking his family to see England play Portugal in the quarterfinal match in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. When England lost, his son, in tears, wished he sold his ticket to a fan they met before the game.

Elder Cuvelier said sometimes people evaluate their decisions on the immediate outcome.

“Some of the choices that we make just don't have an outcome that's going to be immediate here while we're here on earth, but we have to take a look at the big picture,” Elder Cuvelier said in a BYU-Idaho Radio interview.

One of the most important decisions students will make is to follow Christ. Discipleship is a lifelong decision.

“Jesus taught that discipleship requires us to put Him first, even above things we deeply value,” Elder Cuvelier said in his devotional address.

The scriptures offer many examples of people choosing Christ, such as Peter and Mary Magdalene, when called upon. Elder Cuvelier shared one of these moments when he left his job to serve as a mission president in Brazil with his family.

“We don't have just one opportunity to follow the Savior. His hand is stretched out still,” Elder Cuvelier said in the interview.

One of the ways students can come closer to God, Elder Cuvelier said is by making and keeping sacred covenants in the House of The Lord.

“If there is a way that you want to become more like the Savior, come to know Him and be bound to Him and receive His power as we make all of these decisions throughout our lives, what better way than to go to the temple and make covenants with our Father in heaven?”

Elder Cuvelier encourages students to have the Lord guide all their decisions and take time to continue their “great checks” on the path of discipleship.
