The Barrus Concert Hall will transport audience members across the world in the upcoming University Orchestra concert.
With pieces celebrating female composers from all over the world, the concert will feature pieces from multiple time periods from Russia, France, Germany and Great Britain. Many pieces highlight their strings section, and two guest soloists will perform as well. The program includes pieces from female composers the audience might not be familiar with.
“Performing works by female composers is important to me as a conductor because there are so many incredible women who have been writing music as long as men have been writing music, but just due to the societal expectations, these women haven’t had their works performed as much as men,” said University Orchestra Director Noelle Singleton.
The university orchestra is made up of students from across campus with many different majors. It is a non-audition group that welcomes all students. Though many aren’t music majors, the orchestra has worked all semester to learn their pieces and perform them well.
“Coming together with different skill levels is challenging, but it's really incredible to see them really take their skills wherever they're at and just try to elevate them,” Singleton said. “It's incredible what all the students are able to accomplish, even if they haven't played in years.”
The concert is Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. In the Barrus Concert Hall in the Eliza R. Snow Building on campus.
“It's like an opportunity to travel across the world,” Singleton said. “A night spent listening to music can really help a person to connect to themselves and to connect with a more thoughtful moment in time, especially because none of our music has words.”
Tickets are available at tickets.byui.edu. They cost $8 for the general public and $5 for students.
