This week on BYU-Idaho Radio’s The Spot, our hosts talked about Winter Fitness. On this episode, our ears were graced by Maiya Waddell, Austin Pace, and Jake Tibbetts.
We started this episode with our “Spot Takes” - you know, hot takes, but for The Spot. The hosts covered how winter is the perfect time to get into shape with the cold weather and the mental health benefits.
Next our hosts went over discipline tips. Tibbetts mentioned that the first step is the hardest. Exercising for 10 minutes each day is a good strategy because of how it gets you into the flow. Pace spoke of his gym buddy and how keeping a journal to keep track of his progress is helpful for him. Tibbetts gave an example of having a bowl full of marbles and taking one out each day to see gradual progress. The hosts agreed that documenting and seeing progress is helpful.
Workout plans were the next topic. First, our hosts covered at home options for people who don’t go to the gym. Tibbetts mentioned that looking up workout videos can help people who are getting into fitness.
Waddell covered the video game approach with tales of her preference for Just Dance and Wii Fit.
Next, our hosts talked about taking exercise routines out of the house. They discussed gym equipment. One item they focused on was a “Smith” machine and how to use it.
Our hosts agreed that finding what works for you with fitness is important. They covered one of Waddell’s favorites, Wii Fit, and what it is.
Nutrition was our next topic. Our hosts talked about how hydration is very important because of how it benefits you. Then the hosts discussed nutrition and their favorite comfort foods. Tibbetts talked about moderation and balance. He mentioned that it’s okay to have your comfort foods, and that adding healthier food to your diet is more effective than trying to subtract junk food.
Tibbetts said that carbs are important for exercise, especially the kind that you get from fruit and grains.
Our hosts finished things up with a fun quiz, poll results, and upcoming events.
