On this episode of BYU-Idaho Radio’s The Spot, we heard insights regarding the upcoming Spring 2025 semester from Abigail Barber, Preslee Carroll and Maiya Waddell.
The hosts opened the episode with things they were looking forward to in the spring semester, like warmer weather, lighter crowds and upcoming events. Barber explained how she enjoys the beauty that comes with the higher temperatures. Carroll covered the various outdoors activities that become available for students to enjoy in the spring, like hiking and visiting lakes.
The next topic was activities on campus. Carroll enlightened us with information on various events offered on campus. One highlighted event is set to take place throughout the week of June 2 - 7. The week will involve a plethora of activities ranging from service to hiking to country dancing. Carroll explained that rodeos tend to be popular events for students to attend, so they are anticipating a lively turnout.
Our hosts then talked about what makes the spring semester a particularly special one. Barber raved about how beautiful and serene the spring is, especially with fewer students attending school in person. She explained that it can get lonely for some students, but food lines and job opportunities become more abundant. Waddell reminisced on the first Date Night at BYU-Idaho, where there were so many students that the ice cream provided for the event ran out very quickly and many of the events were overcrowded.
After that, our hosts covered more of the fun events and holidays to look forward to in the spring. A probable Date Night was mentioned as was the 4th of July, when BYU-Idaho will have a float in Rexburg’s 4th of July parade.
Our hosts then reminisced on good times they’ve had in the springtime. Carroll loves to play mud volleyball, and she has good memories from competing for that with a team in a tournament. She has also had fun times hiking with roommates and basking in Porter Park’s springtime liveliness. Waddell doesn’t attend school during the spring semester, but she said that she would enjoy a color run or any fun Easter activities offered during the spring. Barber reminisced on a ward Easter egg hunt where she found the most eggs. Our hosts considered that Easter doesn’t always fall in the same semester every year.
The final subject was For the Strength of Youth (FSY), a youth conference that takes place during the summer months that relies on young adult counselors. Our hosts discussed the fact that BYU-Idaho students who want to work for several weeks as an FSY counselor cannot attend the spring semester in person. Waddell served as a counselor for FSY while taking online classes, which was a very busy undertaking. Barber expressed that volunteering as an FSY counselor for even one week can be worthwhile.
