'The Outsiders' is making its return.
'The Outsiders' is a social group under the Outdoor Activities section of the Campus Recreation Program at BYU-Idaho, and it is coming back for the first time in years with an opening social on March 5th.
Caitlyn Christiansen is the outdoor activities marketer and advertising coordinator. She explains what 'The Outsiders' is all about.
"The main point is for you to get together with people who like to hike or rock climb or mountain bike or ice climb or ski or snowboard," Christiansen said. "Whatever you like to do, you can form your own group and go out on those adventures with one another."
The group currently has around 75 members. Students who join 'The Outsiders' are able to participate in all these different activities, and they're available to students at extremely discounted rates.
Trip costs range anywhere from $10 to $20, and Christiansen says the group offers an amazing opportunity for students to go out and try new things. Costs include transportation, instruction and gear, which is a package that's difficult to find outside of college.
'The Outsiders' will hold an opening social on Thursday, March 5th at 11:30 a.m. in room 117 of the Manwaring Center. There will be food and games available to help current and prospective members get to know each other.
"Just try new things," Christiansen said. "You get pushed out of your comfort zone. I've grown a lot and tried a lot of new things this last year. With rock climbing, I was terrified of it but I've tried it and I've done it with people who know what they're doing and it's one of my favorite outdoor activities to do now."
Christiansen says they began to bring 'The Outsiders' back last spring and they plan to continue.
"We want to keep doing an opening social every semester," Christiansen said. "We want to keep doing Outsiders-only events and we're completely open to suggestions so if you have ideas for us, let us know and we'll put it together and plan it for you guys. DM us on Instagram or email us."
