Sunday devotional with Elder Gerrit W. Gong coincides with Super Bowl LVIII

This week’s BYU-Idaho devotional this Sunday is at 5:00 p.m. as Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will speak in the BYU-Idaho Center. Sports fans may be conflicted however, as Elder Gong will speak during the Super Bowl.

BYU-Idaho is excited to welcome Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the BYU-Idaho Center on Sunday to hear from an apostle for the devotional address.

However, Elder Gong’s devotional will begin just a half hour after the start of one of the biggest and highly viewed sporting events of the year. At 4:30 p.m. the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. Some BYU-Idaho students have been anxiously awaiting the Super Bowl all year.

“I will be watching the 49ers destroy the Chiefs in the Super Bowl … ‘Bang Bang Niner Gang!’” said Business Management junior, Cameron Cline.

But for other students the opportunity of hearing from a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is too exciting to miss.

“Honestly, I completely forgot the Super Bowl was happening … I don’t really watch sports or football but if my friends and/or roommates were planning on doing something then I probably would’ve attended, but I think that is superseded by listening to an apostle,” said Connor Madson.

Other students BYU-Idaho Radio spoke to said they are “excited to hear an apostle speak” and “I definitely think the Elder Gong opportunity is ... one I should probably capitalize on.”

The devotional will be broadcast live on BYU-Idaho Radio, 94.3, 91.5 and 88.3 FM. You can also stream it live here.
