REXBURG— Do you have a date Saturday night? Are you worried about not being able to make your date laugh? Bring your date to a comedy show instead.

Stand-up comedian Steve Soelberg is performing the opening act for Frank Caliendo, who is giving a show Saturday evening at BYU-Idaho.

Soelberg’s comedy style often brings satire into everyday inconveniences, like an ill-fitting Halloween costume or hair stuck on the shower wall.

He said he takes inspiration from other comedians, such as Demetri Martin and Jerry Seinfeld, who influenced Soelberg’s comedy style as he grew up.

“I always liked Jerry Seinfeld. I just loved his way of just seamlessly talking about the mundane and all these things that are just so commonplace that we can all relate to. I love capturing a moment and getting people to go into your world and laugh about it,” he said in an interview.

When asked if his career choice surprised his family, Soelberg said his family was not surprised.

The comedian said he has a little family history with comedy, with his grandfather giving comedic shows at military bases during World War II and also performing in the circus.

“He ended up serving there two years just performing at the officer club over and over. That was how he served his country, was just being funny for two years,” Soelberg said in the interview.

Although his grandfather eventually settled on flying airplanes, the comedian legacy lives on through Soelberg.

He has performed in Idaho before, but he has also performed in international locations as well, such as Abu Dhabi and Qatar.

Soelberg’s act will be the opening performance for Frank Caliendo, whose show is on Saturday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Hart Auditorium at the Hart Building on the BYU-Idaho Campus.
