"Nordic Nights" fashion show coming to BYU-Idaho

REXBURG — Good fashion isn’t just found on the runway. In fact, it can be found right here on the campus of BYU-Idaho at the school’s upcoming fashion show.

Mariah Parent, head of the fashion show committee, and Itavi Sterns, marketing chair and social media director, are two of the people who worked behind the scenes to make this fashion show a reality. Sterns said it is all about the students showing off their passion for fashion.

“The fashion show is really all the students coming together, collaborating and showcasing their work,” Sterns said.

This year’s theme is Nordic Nights, meaning the show has more of a wintery undertone. The inspiration for the theme came from an interaction Parent had with a Denmark exchange student when she was in high school.

“She introduced me to the term,” Parent said. “It's Hygge. It's like that feeling of comfort and coziness you get when it's raining and you're like sitting, sipping a cup of whatever hot beverage you enjoy and reading a book. That kind of just feeling that you kind of get around Christmas.”

Since the committee knew the fashion show was happening right around Christmas time, they thought it would be a perfect way to mix fashion with the fall season.

The show will feature line collections, children’s apparel, fit-in-all and CAD. The line collections are student created. Each student majoring in fashion design takes a class called Line Collection, where students put their new knowledge into practice, creating their own clothing lines. Unlike traditional fashion shows, where the show features only one brand of apparel, this show highlights clothes designed by several different students.

“Each Line Collection student is creating a separate line together,” Sterns said. “That entire line collection contains, like, maybe 20 to 50 outfits for our students. There's roughly about maybe four to eight kinds of lines and designs that they're showcasing.”

With so much going into the show, the entire production is considered to be the biggest and best one of its kind that the school has hosted so far.

“We're collaborating with different departments and programs within the campus and school to create this bigger and better event than we've ever had before,” Sterns said. “It is really awesome to create and be a part of this project.”

Parent and Sterns, along with their fellow committee members, hope all the hard work that went into putting this event together leads to the desired outcome.

“Our goal of this fashion show is to kind of collaborate with as many departments as we can during this time,” Sterns said. “We want to be so inclusive of every different society and department in our show. We want to make this fashion show kind of a uniting and cultural experience for Rexburg and for our campus.”
