The careful and ethical use of funds is a practice BYU-Idaho considers of the utmost importance, not just for the management of the university, but also for practice by its students. In an effort to aid BYU-Idaho students in practicing wise money management the Accounting Department is now offering free tax services to its campus students.
The FreeTaxUSA.com-sponsored Volunteer Tax Review Center is a BYU-Idaho service that allows students to come with questions concerning filing, refunds and money owed to the IRS. They also gain insights and experience filing for free.
The service is available to all students who need to file a tax form and no appointments are required.
“Accounting majors help students with their tax questions and students that are interested, or anyone, can stop by the center to get their questions answered or help with their filing,” says Patrick Walsh an accounting professor at BYU-Idaho.
Walsh explains the FreeTaxUSA software allows BYU-Idaho students the ability to file their federal holdings for free. State filings would normally cost money to file, but students who visit the center will receive a coupon code that will allow them to file one state holding for free from FreeTaxUSA.
“So, we’re grateful for FreeTaxUSA for their willingness to kind of incentivize people to come get help,” Walsh says.
The Volunteer Tax Review Center is open Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Smith Building room 355. The center will remain open until March 29.
