REXBURG— In 1999, a remarkable shift began in the portrayal of fatherhood when Patrick Mitchell, the Down to Earth Dad, decided to challenge the prevailing negative stereotypes surrounding "fatherhood engagement."

Traditionally, media often depicted fathers in a less than favorable light, he says, focusing on fatherless homes, deadbeat dads or the narrow lens of child support obligations. However, Mitchell, driven by a desire to explore the positive aspects of fatherhood, embarked on a journey that would not only redefine the national conversation around dads but also transform his own perspective on parenting.

With a journalism background gained from years of working for a daily newspaper, Mitchell took his first step in reshaping the narrative by launching the Down to Earth Dad Newsletter. This newsletter served as a platform for Mitchell to share stories of fathers who defied the negative stereotypes, focusing on their triumphs and shortcomings in the journey of parenthood.

“And I interviewed fathers and said, ‘Hey, what's it like being a dad? What are your challenges, trials?’ And they told me amazing things. So not only did I get to learn about being a better dad just by listening to other dads, but I was able to share that information out with others.”

The heart of Mitchell's initiative lies in the interviews he conducts with fathers from diverse backgrounds. Through these conversations, he delves into what it truly means to be a father, encouraging men to open up about their experiences. The Down to Earth Dad Newsletter evolved into more than just a publication; it became a catalyst for positive change in the way society perceives fatherhood.

Mitchell's dedication to promoting positive fatherhood extends beyond the written word. He actively engages with fathers through training events in schools and delivers keynote speeches on the importance of paternal involvement. One noteworthy initiative is the Family Storytelling Night, where Mitchell not only trains families on sharing their stories but also emphasizes the profound impact storytelling can have on children.

"Storytelling, reading, sharing who we are with our children is something I think we really owe to them because, after all, their story is our story," Mitchell said.

This sentiment reflects the essence of his mission – to strengthen the bond between fathers and children through meaningful interactions.

For Mitchell, the positive stories he hears from other dads have been nothing short of inspiring. Amazed by the big hearts of the fathers he interviews, he acknowledges that each person has made a lasting impact on his own life.

"I am a better dad because of the other dads I have interviewed and talked to," he said.

As a father of three, Mitchell understands the dynamics of parenthood intimately. He emphasizes the importance of fathers stretching themselves to achieve their full potential. Mitchell believes in the power of sacrifice, urging dads to prioritize their children's needs over personal desires.

"Simply sacrificing as a young dad. Learning that the better thing is to just go ahead and sacrifice much of what I want to do to provide my children with the occasion to do something," he said.

Mitchell's reflection on his time spent with his children is special. He has never regarded it as a waste, emphasizing that every moment shared with his kids has been a good time. This perspective underscores the profound impact positive fatherhood can have on both parent and child.

The national conversation surrounding dads has evolved, Mitchell says. However, challenges persist. Gender stereotypes, particularly the notion that dads are goofy or incapable, linger in societal perceptions. Mitchell acknowledges that while traditional family structures work well for some, the evolving role of dads as capable and involved parents is gaining recognition.

Down to Earth Dad's journey reflects a commitment to changing the narrative on fatherhood. Mitchell's efforts to showcase positive stories, engage with fathers, and challenge stereotypes have not only reshaped the national conversation but have also transformed him into a better father. Through his advocacy for meaningful interactions, sacrifice, and storytelling, Mitchell continues to inspire a new generation of dads to redefine their roles and contribute positively to their children's lives.
