REXBURG—Date Night is coming up again at BYU-Idaho, and the campus events team is working hard to keep it new and exciting.
BYU-Idaho President Alvin F. Meredith III and his wife, Jennifer Meredith, renewed the tradition of Date Night at BYU-Idaho shortly after coming to the school. Each semester, those involved in planning the event put in the hours to make it unique and enjoyable.
Event coordinator Kennedy Meyer says the purpose of Date Night is to promote a healthy dating culture for everyone.
“I think sometimes there's a misconception that Date Night is just for single students, but it's for students at any walks of a relationship,” Meyer said. “So, if you're single, if you're dating somebody already, if you're engaged, or if you're married, we created fun dates that you can do with your spouse or with your fiancé or with somebody brand new.”
Date Night kicks off at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in the BYU-Idaho Center with a devotional from President and Sister Meredith. The only thing required for entry is a date.
All attendees will be given a wristband as admittance to activities, as well as a card that is part of a special scavenger hunt. Five items will be hidden throughout campus, and couples should keep an eye out as they go from activity to activity.
“Their little card will tell them how they're supposed to find them and what kind of prize they'll win if they do,” Meyer said.
This semester, the theme is decades, specifically the 1950s and 60s. One of the main activities at Date Night is a 50s diner with dancing and ice cream.
Another is a silent disco, where they will have 1,000 sets of headphones and a party in the Hart Auditorium.
“Yeah, so this semester, we've really tried to have lots of really big activities that can accommodate the biggest amount of people,” Meyer said.
Besides the silent disco and the diner, other activities include a big car show, big games and sports at the stadium, and a board game lounge in the I-Center.
There will also be a raffle for all the Date Night attendees. Everyone who goes to the opening kick-off devotional will be entered, and a few winning couples will win date packages from the BYU-Idaho Outdoor Resource Center.
