Dance meets quantum mechanics, modern medicine and 20th century communication devices in the new BYU-Idaho Dance Alliance show Remarkable Ideas that Changed the World.
The show is set to tour major cities in Idaho and Utah this summer, but this weekend Dance Alliance is performing a sneak peak of its touring show for the community in its showcase.
With a large variety of ballroom, ballet and multicultural dances from the Polynesian Islands and India, the show celebrates the ideas and inventions that changed the world.
“Come and watch, and see how we represent quantum mechanics through dance,” said Dance Alliance professor Diedre Sakota. “The overarching theme is that you are remarkable, you're a gift, you are creation from our Heavenly Father, and that is something to be celebrated.”
Dance Alliance students rehearse six days a week to prepare for the show. They collaborate together to perform a show that everyone loves.
“It just feels a lot bigger than other shows I’ve done,” said student Vicotria Mercado. “We're always creating choreography, and when we're on stage, we're creating. It’s nice that we get to create and make dances based off of inventions that have already been created.”
The Dance Alliance Showcase is Saturday evening at 7:30 in the John W. Hart Building in room 208A. Students and community members will watch the dancers perform in their studios as they unveil the show’s progress.
“I believe in this company. I believe in this show. I strongly believe that when people come, they can feel not only the entertainment and the joy, but they can feel the power of the spirit manifesting to them and the testimonies that the students share,” Sakota said.
“I think the show is already really good. We've all been working so hard already, and there's a lot of variety, so there's something that everyone will like,” Mercado said.
The event is free for all ages and reservations aren’t necessary. You can find more information on Instagram @byuidance.
