REXBURG—Key to the mission of BYU-Idaho is to help develop not only students’ academic achievement, but also to help them develop as disciple leaders. The Student Leadership Council works under the direction of the Campus Life Department to help foster opportunities for students to become disciple leaders.

A disciple leader is a person who is a follower of Jesus Christ who is also a leader in their home, their community and in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“Our purpose as a Student Leadership Council here on campus… is to build disciple leadership amongst the students and the student body,” says Kate Timmerman, the student director of the Student Leadership Council.

The council’s Disciple Leadership Trainings are designed to offer BYU-Idaho students the skills and experience working as disciple leaders, even now offering Disciple Leadership Certificates to students who complete the necessary program. These leadership certificates are awarded to students who attend at least four of the bi-monthly training sessions. They offer a means for students to express leadership experience on their resumes helping them toward their future pursuits.

“In order to make it as useful and credible as possible we went … and got it approved through the school, so this is a certificate approved by the school. So, if it’s on your resume, it’s actually going to mean something,” says Davis Johnson, the Disciple Leadership Trainings coordinator on the Student Leadership Council.

Only four sessions remain for the Winter semester, meaning students hoping to attend for the first time, must attend all the remaining training sessions to be eligible for a certificate this semester.

The next training is Thursday, Feb. 15 from 4-5pm in the Taylor Cultural Hall.

“I think having this leadership experience … like anything you can use to build for yourself … definitely take advantage of, especially right now when it’s free, you don’t have to pay money for it, so come and check it out,” Timmerman says.
