REXBURG — BYU-Idaho is full of student-led societies. This spring, Chad Jimenez, president of the Pre-Med Society, is excited to continue fun activities this semester. From meetings with doctors weekly to suturing chickens and practicing medical school techniques.
“We’ve had students come up to us and say, ‘Oh my gosh that was so fun, that was amazing, when are we doing this again? We got to do this more often, this is great, this is amazing!'” Jimenez said.
This spring semester, the Pre-Med Society will continue its practice of suturing chickens, practicing medical school techniques, along with future rotation stations working with the nursing program to create more medical practice stations.
“It’s exciting because we watch all these doctor shows, medical shows where they’re doing all this and that, and some of the scenes are suturing, right? And that's not really something you get to learn until medical school, right? And we’re giving students an opportunity to get a taste of that here,” Jimenez said.
Joining the society can help students prepare to make decisions about whether medical life is what they really want. Jimenez said he tells students the society can help them figure that out.
The pre-Med society also has internship opportunities, working with Harvard, Brigham Young University, Utah State, and even a residency opportunity in Rexburg.
"I don't think anyone really knows about that. Technically after you graduate medical school, there is a tiny possibility that you could do your residency here in Rexburg,” Jimenez said.
The Pre-Med Society meets Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. in the Benson Building, room 110. All majors are welcome.
