The Great Scott Bassoon Octet is a bassoon group at BYU-Idaho. The group will perform for the first time together on Tuesday in a free concert at the Eliza R. Snow Building at BYU-Idaho.

The group formed by happenstance when Elizabeth Crawford, a BYU-Idaho faculty member in the Music Department, realized the bassoon studio had more members participating than ever before.

“This semester, when I realized I had eight bassoons, which I don't often have, I was like, ’Boy, it'd be so fun to do a bassoon octet concert,’” Crawford said. “And I said this during our weekly masterclass where we all get together and work on various things, and then they were like, ‘Wait, no, let's actually do it.’”

The group, named after one of the bassoon players named Scott, was formed. It includes six bassoons and two contra bassoons, which are an octave lower than the regular bassoon.

“It's actually the lowest instrument in the orchestra,” Crawford said. “This bassoon octet is going to be a very novel sonic experience. I can guarantee you no one on this campus has ever heard a bassoon octet.”

The octet will perform in its first ever concert for free on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Snow Recital Hall in the Eliza R. Snow Building. The group said they will have special prizes for individuals who participate in what they call a “grassroots marketing campaign.”

“So currently, if you go to Paramount Theater, you shall see an ad for the Great Scott Bassoon Octet Extravaganza,” Crawford said. “If you take a picture of yourself with the ad and hashtag BYUI bassoons, I will be sure that you get a custom sticker and a few other things at the concert. So go check that out, grab a picture. And also, around campus, there's about 70 trading cards. If you can get one in your hands, bring it to the concert for more prizes.”
