In a night of unforgettable performances, BYU-Idaho students take the spotlight with a one-of-a-kind student showcase run completely by students.
From directors and actors to set and costume designers the showcase is crafted entirely by students. They’ll perform both dramatic and comedic scenes from plays, one acts and songs from musicals, including an original musical written by a student.
“Student showcases like this are a newer thing in the department, and so it's kind of trailblazing in a lot of ways,” said Stage Manager Harlee Higginbotham. “I've seen it grow as we've gotten to be more comfortable and as the show itself has started to come together more.”
Each of the characters in the showcase try to fight for their dreams and make sacrifices to achieve them, a theme the students came up with.
“Our scenic designer, his design statement was that he wanted his design to be a love letter to those in the theater, and I think I’ve kind of been able to find that theme in all of our pieces,” Higginbotham said.
The free showcase opens on Tuesday with shows running through Friday. They all start at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre in the Eliza R. Snow Building.
“These students, including myself, have put tons of work into it,” said Faith Bingham who plays Charlie in the original musical. “It's been months that we've been working on it, and it would be really cool to see our peers to come see what we've done.”
